You’re probably aware that Niagara Regional Council is seriously considering taking over the two airports in Niagara. It started out as only one of them (in Niagara-on-the-lake) but, when the South Niagara heard about it, they demanded that Regional Council take their turkey off their hands as well.
The Niagara District Airport (the northern one) is supported by St. Catharines, Niagara Falls and Niagara-on-the-Lake. Thorold used to have a stake in it as well, but a number of years ago Thorold Council decided they didn’t want to keep feeding this bottomless money pit and got out. Now however, thanks to the folks at the Region, we may soon be helping to foot the bill once through our Regional taxes.
There are some things you just can’t escape.
At least, however, I hope our Regional Councillors take the route that will cut our losses (notice I didn’t say theirs). If the Region is going into the airport business, at least shut one down and use the better of the two. North/south politics be damned – cut our losses.
