First, they removed the buses from Winterberry Blvd., although it will mean students will have to go up Silver Maple Rd. to catch the bus. Now, in case you’ve been waiting for  it, Council will be looking at a Residential Rental By-Law on Tuesday evening during general Committee.

Before you start thinking that this will answer all your student problems, however, this by-law won’t affect the way students act. That still will have to be addressed under existing by-laws that govern noise, parking, etc. The licencing is mostly intended to assure that yards will be clean and well-kept, that the buildings are safe, and that landlords act responsibly. But, if things go as they hope, and indeed the report calls for it, the money raised from licencing will pay for two more by-laws officers to help enforce licencing and other by-laws.

It is, at least, another step toward dealing with the problem.

If you want this by-law passed, make sure you’re there: the landlords certainly will be.
